When Is Sick Too Sick for School?
Knowing when to keep your child home helps protect their health and the well‑being of others.

✅ Send my child to school if:

They have a runny nose or mild cough with no other symptoms.
Sores are dry, healing, or covered.
They have had no fever for 24 hours and have not taken fever‑reducing medication during that time.
They have not vomited or had diarrhea for 24 hours.

🚫 Keep my child at home if:

They have a temperature over 100.4°F, even after medication.
They have untreated, oozing sores that cannot be covered.
They are vomiting or have diarrhea.
Their eyes are pink, crusty, or have white or yellow discharge.
They are injured or too ill to take part in normal school activities.

💡 Tips from your school nurses:

Make sure your child gets 8–10 hours of sleep each night.
Encourage breakfast every morning.
Ensure glasses are worn daily if prescribed.
Keep emergency contacts up to date with the school.
Confirm your child meets West Virginia immunization requirements.

If you have health concerns or questions, please contact your school nurse.
