There are people making GOOD CHANGE all around us, all of the time. You're never (EVER) too young, or too old, to #ChangeTheWorld. None of us arrived to place we're at today without the helping hand of someone else. Today, think about who has changed YOUR life (your world) for the better, and do something to Pay It Forward by helping someone else. #youmatterimatter #CHANGEMAKERS #helpHOPElive #MONDAY #MondayMotivation #MentalHealthMonday #MondayMOJO #MondayFunday #ChangeMaker #CCMHS #KeepersOfLife

On Thursday April 11th the Calhoun Middle School Band traveled to Williamstown High School for the required annual adjudication. The band was judged by a panel of 3 judges. Each judge grades the performance of two songs across a variety of musical elements. The grades are then averaged to award a rating between 5 to 1 with 1 being the best. Each judge awards a rating which are then averaged for an overall rating. Two judges awarded a 2 which is classified as an excellent rating. One judge felt that a rating of 1 (a superior rating) was a worthy award. Overall the band was awarded a 2, this rating reflects an unusual performance in many respects but not one worthy of the highest rating due to minor defects. However, it is a performance of distinctive quality. From the directors perspective, I am pleased with the results and proud of our young musicians. In our debrief this morning, our young students identified areas for improvement that aligned with the judges feedback. We as a performance group understand that we have the capability of producing a superior performance. The difference between an excellent and superior performance is a mindset. An “eye on the ball” mentality that pushes each performer to carefully execute each musical phrase with dynamic control and articulation. A “head in the game” attitude that holds each performer conscious of each sections balance and blend. This area can be quite difficult to manage in a small band. I hope that the feedback we have received will motivate our musicians to focus on the minor details in any given performance and strive for that superior distinction. Last year the band was awarded a superior rating, the first in a decade. These ratings are rare and difficult to achieve. Music difficulty is a factor in the growth of the program. Music is graded in difficulty 1-6. Generally 1-2 is an average middle school difficulty, 3-4 high school, and 5-6 collegiate Last year’s performance featured music that was graded by WVMEA as 1 and 2. This year both selections were difficulty grade 2. All in all, our band has consistently increased its ability to execute more demanding repertoire while holding performance quality to a high standard. Well done middle school band!

Happy #MentalHealth Monday! Some of us LOVE a Monday & others not so much… so if you’re feeling #BLUE about what day of the week it is, we challenge you to try to #ChangeYourMindset by using some color psychology. Why we do we even say “Feeling Blue” referring to sadness or being down. Did you know blue is the MOST favored color in the world & it’s scientifically known to be calming? We’re looking for YELLOW anywhere & everywhere this week, just because & we hope you’ll join us! Think about YOUR favorite color – why it’s your favorite, how it’s tied to how you feel & how you feel when you wear or see it. (Then look for it all week long.) This is your #MONDAY reminder that #YOUMATTER & we hope you have a great week ahead. #MotivationMonday #MondayMOJO #ChangeMaker #ChangeMakers #helpHOPElive #KeepersOfLife #MakeYourOwnMotivation #youmatterimatter #MentalHealthMatters
