Calhoun County Schools received a $20,000 grant from the Sisters Health Foundation to provide tobacco prevention/intervention and mental health awareness & wellness: Train Your Brain; Help, Hope, Live in Calhoun for students through a brokered partnership with Westbrook, Minnie Hamilton Health Systems, Communities in Schools, 21st Century Learning and the Brother Up Foundation. Calhoun County Schools and the West Virginia Department of Education is honored to announce the 2023 Golden Horseshoe winners for Calhoun County. Cooper Morris & Orion Swearingen Since 1931, students have been honored as knights of the Golden Horseshoe having demonstrated exceptional knowledge of West Virginia history on the state administered exam. This year, 226 winners will join the ranks of WV citizens who have won this prestigious award. Your county winners will have an opportunity to be recognized at our Golden Horseshoe ceremony on June 13, 2023 at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston, WV.

WVU's S-STEM Scholarship Program Application Deadline: First consideration is given to application submitted before May15, 2023. WVU's Department of Physics and Astronomy received an NSF S-STEM grant to support WV students to study physics with a computational area of emphasis at WVU with a scholarship of up to to $10, 000 a year for up to 4 years. HEALTH CARE PATHWAY INITIATIVE PROGRAM (HCPI) The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine brings a glimpse into the care settings and structure of workplaces in science, research, health care, pharmacy, nursing, health informatics, technology, and engineering to HCPI in a fun and innovative way. Program participants will interact with medical students, faculty, and other health professionals. This program offers highly motivated underrepresented high school students (grades 9-12) interested in a career in STEM the opportunity to experience those careers first hand. Program dates are June 4-June 29. The deadline to apply is May 7, 2023. Please see Ms. Sampson for assistance in registering.

March 31st is the deadline to apply for the American Legion Auxiliary WV Rhododendron Girls State. Girls State is for rising Seniors and will be held June 11-16 at the campus of Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV. The cost to attend is $300. Purpose: to know the duties, privileges, rights, and responsibilities of citizenship to recognize the need for honesty, integrity, and responsibility in private and public life to understand that the very life of democracy depends on informed and concerned citizens to realize the increasingly importance role of women in public life. to be responsible, active participants in the communities in which they live Eligibility: Be a member in good standing (minimum of 2.75 GPA) of the current Junior class of West Virginia Be a resident of West Virginia Be single Be in attendance for the full week of the program Be attending Girls State for the first time See Ms. Sampson for more details.

Please consider being in the Queen Flora Pageant on Saturday, May 6, 2023. This opportunity is only available to you your junior year of high school. I’m asking that you step out of your comfort zone and give this pageant a try. You can be part of a tradition that has been going on for over 60 years. Don’t regret missing out on this! We have a growing prize package for the winner and the more contestants the more runner ups that will be named. The runner up contestants will be awarded a custom plaque. Other prizes include Miss Photogenic, Miss Congeniality and People’s Choice. We will have practice sessions the week of the pageant. The panel of judges will include a variety of people from outside of Calhoun County and will not know any of the contestants.
