The West Virginia Department of Education is honored to announce the 2024 Golden Horseshoe winners for Calhoun County. Since 1931, students have been honored as knights of the Golden Horseshoe having demonstrated exceptional knowledge of West Virginia history on the state-administered exam. This year, Jasmyne Tingler, & Ryleigh Crislip-Garrett will join the ranks of WV citizens who have won this prestigious award. These ladies will have an opportunity to be recognized at the Golden Horseshoe ceremony on June 11, 2024, at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston, WV.

Senior Spotlight Alyssa Marie Yeager Plans after graduating: After high school graduation I plan to work a part-time job and also attend Glenville State University to obtain my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology. After that, I plan to complete more schooling to become a Criminal Psychologist. Favorite quote: "Life is tough, but so are you." Advice: Do your work the best you possibly can the first time around, and be prepared because things do get tough. But if you believe in yourself and stay determined, you'll do just fine.

Senior Spotlight Nyla Madison Warner Plans after graduation: I plan to attend Glenville State University majoring in field forensics. Favorite quote: "Now maybe it's time to trust. Senior Spotlight Grace McKenzie Vincent Plans after graduation ~ I plan to attend Glenville State University and obtain a bachelor’s degree in business management, I plan to cheer for GSU as well. Favorite quote ~ “Gods plan is worth the wait” ~ Isaiah 30:18 Advice to pass on ~ My best advice for the underclassman is take your time, make memories, and have fun. For the upcoming seniors take it slow it goes by fast and don’t forget to do your FAFSA. Honors ~ This year I have been a part of Student Council as historian, Spanish National Honors Society’s Vice President, President of CTE Graphic Design, and President of CTE Energy and Power.

Senior Spotlight Jacob Quaid Toney What are your plans after graduation? I plan to enter the workforce after graduation. Favorite quote: “Kindness is doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.” Advice to pass on: Remember every moment is an opportunity to learn.

Senior Spotlight Owen Douglas Taylor Plans after graduation: My plan after graduation is to attend Marshall University and to major in Mechanical Engineering. Advice: My advice to pass on to the underclassmen is to take school seriously.

Senior Spotlight Jacy R. Stehman Future plans- I will be attending Glenville State University to obtain my bachelor's degree in business management, and I will be minoring in marketing and sales. I have also signed onto the Glenville State cheer team for the 2024-2025 academic year. Calhoun County Schools is proud to announce that Emily Grace Anderson will be continuing her academic and twirling career at Marshall University. Emily has earned a spot on the Majorette Line and will be taking the field with the Marching Thunder. Emily is honored and excited to be a part of The Herd Family!

Senior Spotlight Lindsay Mae Smith What are your plans after graduation? I honestly don't know yet, but once I get out and start looking for jobs I'll figure it out. Senior Spotlight Whitney Lehnell Nettles Plans: My plans after high school are to attend Glenville State University this upcoming fall to major in Accounting. Also, always trust in God because he knows what he is doing.

Senior Spotlight Maggie Mitchell What are your plans after graduation? I plan on going to college to become a registered nurse. Senior Spotlight Felicity Hope Marks Plans after graduation: I plan to go to BridgeValley this fall to get my Associate’s of Science, and then finish out a Bachelor's at WVU Keyser. I want to be a field study biologist. I've always preferred animals and hope to find plenty of peace working with them in the forest daily. Favorite quote: "In the end, one's life is measured by those we've changed." -Caustic, Apex Legends Advice: My advice to young people is to worry less and be bold. Life gets dull when worry is all you see. Don't confine yourself to a boring lifestyle, do what brings you joy, do things you're passionate about. Live frivolously. Remember to be kind and thoughtful of other's struggles, as one of my favorite quotes has taught me.

Senior Spotlight Trenton Paul King What are your plans after graduation? Continue to work in the oil and gas industry Favorite quote: "The older you do get the more rules they’re gonna try and get you to follow. You just gotta keep livin' man." Advice to pass on: Just keep chasin’ the dream. Don't just dream it.

This past March, Emily Anderson competed in the annual Sandra Day O’Connor Civics Challenge. She chose the topic of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor to create a mixed media project showcasing important things about the former Justice. Projects were judged nationally from grades 9-12. Emily was notified 5-12-24 that she was was awarded honorable mention for her project! Congratulations, Emily!

Senior Spotlight Mia Renee Houchin Plans after graduation: I plan to build on my associate degree I am achieving prior to graduation and get my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Glenville State University to finish my undergraduate studies. While achieving my bachelor's degree I also plan to achieve my real estate sales license for the state of West Virginia and take classes to become a Licensed Residential Real Estate Appraiser in the State of West Virginia as well. I plan on this being my lifetime career, however if for some reason I would ever decide differently I can obtain many other jobs with my degree! Favorite Quote: "There may be people that have more talent than you, but there's no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do." —Derek Jeter Advice to pass on: Take any opportunity that comes your way, challenge yourself, get involved, and believe in yourself even when no one else does. When making decisions think about what’s best to help you prepare for life beyond high school. Take every day as if it is your last even if you don’t enjoy school, it goes by much faster than you think! Mia holds the prestigious honor of having earned her Associate’s Degree from Glenville State University while attending high school. She will be awarded her GSU Associate’s Degree concurrently with her high school diploma.

Senior Spotlight Breanna Danyale Helmick What are your plans after graduation? My plans after I graduate are to go to Glenville State University to be an Art Teacher. Senior Spotlight Abigail Lynn Godfrey Plans after graduation: I plan on getting a job over the summer and sticking to that job and going to college in the fall of 2024. Favorite quote: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill". Advice: Do your best and always try and never give up when it's the end of the year and the last 9 weeks and do your work on time.
